QUÉ vs CUÁL
Two question words, one English word: “what / which” · Spanish A1
1. The explanation
QUÉ and CUÁL both can mean what or which, but they are not interchangeable. The rule depends on what comes after the question word: a noun or a verb.

Quick tip: If a noun comes next, use QUÉ. If you ask for a definition, use QUÉ ES. If you want a specific answer with the verb ser, use CUÁL (plural: CUÁLES). Remember: cuál + noun = NEVER!
