Who doesn’t love a cozy evening reading in Spanish a good book? Now that we can enjoy the autumn weather which hasn’t been very common in Valencia even though we are in November we want to give you in this article some recommendations to start reading in Spanish.
These books are great tools for learning vocabulary, grammar, and expressions. Apart from these, if you have read a book in your language that you’ve liked, it is also recommended to reread it in Spanish to make sure you understand the plot and focus on language questions. Here we go!
Firstly, we are going to see books recommended for students with a basic level in Spanish:
El Principito – Antoine de Saint Exupéry
You can’t say you haven’t read this book. It is the most translated book, and everyone knows about it. A pilot gets lost in the middle of the desert and he finds a little man who comes from the planet B612. This book is about friendship, human relations and the loss of childhood. It’s moving and a comfort book for a lot of people. Spanish will help you to learn some vocabulary as it is a children’s book.
Harry Potter – J.K. Rowling
Another classic… Even if you have watched the films, which is very possible, try to read this book in Spanish, they don’t age, and “El Principito”, being a children’s saga makes it easier to learn Spanish with it. A little boy called Harry Potter lives with his evil aunt, uncle, and cousin when he receives a letter from Hogwarts, a magical school for wizards and witches. There he will meet Hermione and Ron and have a lot of adventures.
Heartstopper – Alice Oseman
You might have heard of this Netflix show but, do you know that it is based in a saga of graphic novels? They tell the story of Charlie and Nick, two boys who fall in love. One is homosexual but the other is discovering his sexuality and who he is. A beautiful love story that will make your heart melt. The fact that it is a graphic novel makes it easier to understand the story and the grammar is not as difficult as in a regular novel so read the first one and give it a chance, but in Spanish!
And now, here you have some books for a more advanced level:
Asesinato en el Orient Express – Agatha Christie
For mystery novel lovers, this classic will keep your eyes stuck in the pages of it until you finish it. In Yugoslavia, a storm stops a train where a murder is committed. ¿Who has done it? It can be only a passenger from the train, but who? The grammar and vocabulary in Spanish are more difficult than the books we have mentioned before, so make sure you are prepared and enjoy the read.
La sombra del viento – Carlos Ruiz Zafón
This book is the first one of the “Cementerio de los libros olvidados” saga, so if you like it, you can continue reading this author, one of the most important of contemporary Spanish literature. Daniel, a little boy, chooses a book and discovers something strange in it. Mystery, romance, fantasy… a mix of genres that will captivate you. As we talk about alittle boy, some words might seem easy, but others are quite more difficult than Harry Potter, for example.
We hope you give one of these books a try and learn Spanish with a fascinating hobby: reading.
